Most of our rings, bands and bracelets come in two metal choices: solid 14K gold or 14K gold plated. They look the same on day one, but they are made differently and wear differently over time. Here is what you need to know before you choose.

What is solid 14K gold?

Solid 14K gold is an alloy that is 14 parts pure gold out of 24, or about 58.3% gold, mixed with other metals for strength. The gold runs all the way through the piece. White gold and yellow gold are both 14K; the difference is the other metals in the mix and, for white gold, a bright finish.

What is gold plated jewelry?

Gold plated jewelry has a thin layer of 14K gold bonded to the surface of a different base metal. It gives you the look of gold at a much lower price.

Best for Engagement rings and wedding bands worn every day Fashion pieces, trying a style, or a lower budget

Which should you choose?

For an engagement ring or wedding band you plan to wear every day for years, solid 14K gold is the better long-term choice. It holds up to daily wear and keeps its color.

Gold plated pieces are a great way to get the look for less, especially for fashion bracelets, earrings or a second ring you will wear occasionally. To make plating last longer, take your jewelry off before swimming, showering, working out or using lotions and cleaning products.
